KS3 Science

In KS3 Science, we stream the teaching of Science so that pupils have access to specialist teaching from the outset and are thus prepared for IGCSE.

Within each stream, pupils are divided as accurately as possible through regular formative and summative assessment into ability groups, to help differentiate teaching and learning.

To ensure pupils have a consistent quality assured experience we use the Exploring Science Scheme to aid delivery of the KS3 course.

The Science department believes firmly in learning through doing and therefore ensures all topics incorporate a diverse range of practicals to help reinforce learned concepts, test theorem and develop scientific inquiry skills.

Assessment

In KS3 we take both a formative and summative approach to assessment throughout each year. Pupils are assessed in the following ways:

  1. Assessment for Learning during lessons.
  2. Level-Assessed Badger Task activities.
  3. End of Topic Tests.
  4. Mini low-stakes Quizzes/competitions/challenges.
  5. Peer, self and whole class activities.
  6. Scientific Inquiry Tasks.
  7. A website called Educake (online formative assessment platform)

Throughout the year, pupils are encouraged to reflect on their performance in summative assessments by completing a record sheet that is stuck into their exercise book. This forms the basis of a dialogue of areas of improvement between the pupil and teacher.

In each term, pupils sit assessments within each stream based only on each of the topics taught. All pupils take the same assessment in order to maximise their attainment potential.

The KS3 Curriculum spans over year 7 and 8 only, with the Edexcel IGCSE courses commencing in year 9 to allow maximum practical opportunities and give pupils the best chances to understand their learning properly.

KS4 Science

In an effort to deliver a world-class education, Science is a core subject in Dukhan English School. All pupils at the end of the Year 8 course move on to study Edexcel Science at IGCSE level (9-1) to complement our Edexcel International A-Level courses.

KS5 Science

In year 12 and 13 pupils study the Edexcel International Advanced Level in a Science of their choice. This is an international alternative to the Edexcel Ofqual-regulated A level qualifications.

Key Features

-  Flexible, modular structure.
-  January and June examinations to support students wishing to progress to local and international universities.
-  AS qualifications can be taken as stand-alone qualifications or used as a stage on the way to completing an Advanced Level. AS represents 50% of an Advanced Level.
-  100% external assessment with no coursework.
-  Specifications can be delivered in an international context to fully equip the international learner.
-  Written to the same rigorous standards as all Edexcel qualifications.
-  Regulated by Pearson.
-  Provides progression from Edexcel International GCSEs.
