Helping at Home

​​​​Reading at home has so many benefits in supporting communication, social interactions, creativity and literacy skills. By IMG_1363.JPGspending a minimum of 15 minutes a day exploring books you can help the introduction of a range new of vocabulary and skills linked to sequencing and mathematics.  

The quality of your sleep directly affects your mental and physical health and the quality of your waking life, including your productivity, emotional balance, brain and heart health, immune system, creativity, vitality, and even your weight. No other activity delivers so many benefits with so little effort!
The recommended amount of sleep is below. 


Digital media has become a huge part of our lives although it has been proven to impact both behaviour and the social skills to enable children to interact. It can be an easy solution to turn on the television, grab the iPad or give the children a phone. Please see below for the recommended screen time per age group. 
 

Help during online learning

Maintain routines: Make sure to keep the structure of the day the same as you would if we were in school. Maintaining a regular schedule will give you good organisation for building your family and school schedules
Stay connected: DES has a structure in place for online learning. Stay in touch with your teacher and other parents to work through this together
Enjoy family time: Play cards, cook a new or favourite recipe, make up silly songs, look at old family photos and write a story about them. Your child will be learning and having fun! With this extra time at home, talk with your children about their strengths, interests and where they might need support
Organise their learning environment: (both physical and digital). Make sure your child has a space in the house to work on, without distractions so that they can focus on their online learning work. Creating a weekly to-do list can also help them remember what is due and when they can complete it
Encourage self-direction: Make sure your child’s learning is their own and that you are helping them to understand. The more your child owns their learning the more they will learn
