Welcome to the Mathematics Department at Dukhan English School. We are a diverse and multi-lingual department of experienced teachers, with our practice rooted in the UK and developed further with an international perspective. Each of our teachers bring different experiences, professionally; culturally; linguistically and even beyond.

We strive, in cooperation with our colleagues across the school and the parental community, to support every child in achieving at the highest levels of Mathematics. Our curriculum is designed with the belief that every child can achieve, and we continually adapt our approaches to ensure that each students individual needs are being addressed.

Curriculum

KS3 Mastery Curriculum

Our 3-year syllabus focuses on students securing the fundamental Mathematical skills and concepts so that they can progress on to IGCSE Higher Mathematics and beyond.

Mastering mathematics involves all students achieving a true depth of understanding of mathematical concepts. It encompasses:

· a unique unit structure

· mastery of depth and breadth

· an evidence-based focus on fluency, problem-solving and reasoning.

Mastery of depth and breadth

The mastery approach enables every student to acquire a deep and solid understanding of the subject.

The pacing of learning is connected to student progress, with many opportunities to revisit key concepts in different contexts, and new topics are only introduced when almost all students have mastered the current topics. Students who master topics at a faster pace do not simply do more of the same or move on. Instead, they are exposed to more challenge through investigations, open-ended questions, rich tasks and tasks that involve deeper reasoning and problem solving.

Our mastery approach is based on evidence of successful practice from the UK and high performing countries in South East Asia.

Problem-solving and reasoning

Embedded into our mastery approach is a specific focus on problem-solving, building strategies to address a problem and developing mathematical reasoning skills. Our approach equips students with the skills to approach multiple problems with confidence and to demonstrate their reasoning, thus helping them to succeed in assessments and future study and employment.

Key Stage 4

At the end of Key Stage 3, all students are presented for Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics.  The vast majority of students are presented for Higher Tier.

Students who show exceptional ability have the opportunity to study Edexcel IGCSE Further Mathematics as part of their Mathematics curriculum.

Further Mathematics

Key Stage 5

We deliver the International Advanced Level in Mathematics by Pearson Edexcel, with students studying both Pure (Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry and Calculus) and Applied (Statistics, Mechanics and Decision) modules.
