Curriculum >> Key Stage 4 >> Science
In line with the school mission and vision:
The Dukhan English School Science
department aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum accessible to all
pupils, regardless of ability, gender, race, creed or culture, building on the
primary curriculum in a manner that is continuous and progressive.
We recognise and aim to contribute to the understanding that the
school is in the heart of a culturally diverse community that is united by
respect and understanding.
We aim to support the community of students, staff
and parents through the delivery of a high quality Science education.
As a department, we aim to become trusted and valued
partners in this community committed to the learning, development and success
of all students.
We will aim to care for all students by providing
specialist, well-resourced facilities that are both safe and stimulating for
the pupils to develop their scientific knowledge and understanding and to
maintain their level of enthusiasm.
We aim to inspire and challenge all students through
a ‘hands-on’ investigative approach to science lessons that encourage students
to strive to do their best and fulfil their potential.
We recognise and promote the
schools commitment to life-long learning, traditional and cultural values and
aim to embed these into the science curriculum.
We aim to provide a science curriculum that
encourages all members of our school to be healthy individuals, global
citizens, reflective and creative thinkers.
We aim to develop in the pupils problem solving and
investigative skills as well as informed attitudes.
In order to reach their full potential the pupils must have access to a challenging and varied curriculum, tailored to individual and group needs. Pupils should be encouraged to put knowledge and understanding of the application of Science in a social and ethical context and to make evaluations.
In all aspects of our classroom experience, we
incorporate the best aspects of 21st competencies. Further to this,
we are fully aware of the application of our subject in the wider word,
therefore we have focus on STEM cross-curricular points to highlight the
multifarious extension opportunities that are inherent in our subject.
We are reflective in our practice and take a
collaborative approach to cascading best practice. At all times, we are putting
the learning process and delivery of effective teaching at our core.
In an effort to
deliver a world-class education, Science is now a core subject in Dukhan
English School. All pupils at the end of the Year 9 course move on to study
Edexcel Science at IGCSE level to complement our Edexcel A-Level courses. We offer 3 pathways at IGCSE which are
determined for pupils according to summative and formative assessment data from
year 9. Post year 9 End of Year Exam pupils are banded into ability sets: Sets
1 and 2 (Separate Science), set 2 (Double Award Science) and set 4 (Single
Award Science). These groupings are constantly subject to review throughout
the course, allowing pupil to move both ways appropriately.
