Curriculum >> Key Stage 3 >> English
The English Department at Dukhan English School aims to
provide all students with the English language skills needed to thrive in the
modern world. The four core areas of the curriculum are Reading, Writing,
Speaking and Listening. All students are guided towards achieving a high level
of success in all of these skills.
Key Stage 3, all students follow a curriculum which reflects the aims and
objectives of the National Curriculum for England and Wales, but is modified to
suit the needs of students at DES. Students read a wide variety of texts, both
non-fiction and fiction, such as poetry, prose and play scripts. These texts
are chosen to represent 1,000 years of history and culture from around the
world, and the multicultural aspects of the texts that students study reflect
their diverse backgrounds and interests, while at the same time exposing them
to a wide range of new ideas and concepts.
Students also develop their ability to produce texts in a range of different
forms and styles, such as letters, newspaper articles, persuasive
advertisements, poems and stories. As well as being able to produce texts in
the appropriate format, students focus on writing texts that are accurate in
terms of spelling, punctuation and grammar. In addition, students’ oral
communication skills are developed through the use of role-play, discussion
groups and individual presentations which help students to learn the skills
necessary to function effectively across the curriculum.
